Corning's Matt Forrest hadn't scored a goal in his collegiate career, and when he finally did, it couldn't have come at a better time. Forrest broke a 1-1 tie with 2:30 left in the game and gave the Red Barons, and second-year head coach Tom Kirchhoff, their first Region III victory in two seasons.
Corning struck first at 33:50 as Ryan Moore headed a ball into an open Niagara net courtesy of a ball from the foot of Jake Roth. Corning enjoyed the 1-0 lead and looked in control until NCCC's Scott Falla broke away from the Corning defense and streaked up the middle of the field, beating CCC keeper Corey Swarthout, to tie the game at 1's. For the next 30 minutes, each team had limited offensive opportunities but the best one belonged to NCCC as they were awarded a PK at the 66:50 mark. Swarthout stepped up and denied the goal on a diving save to the lower right hand corner.
Forrest's heroics came from the right center area of the field as Jake Roth recorded his second assist on the day. Forrest pounded a knuckleball from about 35-yards out that beat the Thunderwolves keeper to the upper 90. That was all the Barons needed to seal the victory. Swarthout finished with 7 saves. CCC's Ethan Roth and PJ Povoski were outstanding and played key roles in the victory as they both won numerous balls in the air.
