The NJCAA announced its softball All-American team Friday and CCC's Bridgette Sutryk found herself a place on the 2nd team, establishing her as one of the top three catchers in the nation at the NJCAA D3 level. Sutryk becomes the 18th CCC softball player to earn NJCAA All-American honors in the past fifteen seasons.
Sutryk was the leader of the 2012 team that finished as the Region IIIA Runners-Up. During a key time of the season when Corning had lost two of its starts, Sutryk showed her true leadership by floating at various positions where and when needed. Her versatility and consistency at the plate is a huge reason the Red Barons went on a 18-2 run to end the regular season and clinch a Final Four spot in the play-offs.
Sutryk hit .453 with 18 doubles (one behind the CCC single season record) and 41 RBI's. She scored 40 runs and was a perfect 13 for 13 stolen bases. Her 63 hits this season is also a school record 2nd best. She had a team-high .486 on-base percentage and a .619 slugging percentage. From behind the plate, she allowed only one passed ball and picked eight runners off base. She has left her name scattered throughout the CCC record book for top 5 single season and career categories.
CCC Head Coach Stacy Johnson had this to say about Sutryk's selection: "I am very happy for Bridgette and this honor is well-deserved. She is one of the hardest working and most unselfish players I have had the privilege to coach. No matter what I needed her to do, she put the team above her own needs and did what was asked. She is a competitor in every sense of the word. Base runners respected Bridgette's arm and aggressiveness behind the plate. It is nice to see a player that works so hard, does the right thing day in and day out and plays the game with such a love, get recognized. Bridgette will go in the books as one of the great ones to wear the Corning uniform."
