Red Barons Induct Inaugural Class Into Athletics Hall of Fame

More than 100 guests gathered at Corning Community College's Spencer Hill campus on October 20, 2012 to honor outstanding Red Barons athletes, coaches, and contributors. The inaugural inductees include Ms. Donna M. Dayton '76, Ms. Heidi J. (Brooks) Grimins '04, Mr. Timothy Havens, Mr. Erminio D. DeAngelis, Mr. Ryan R. Shafer '86,  Ms. Beverly A. Beebe, Mr. Wayne C. Kenner (posthumously) and Mr. Neil F. Bulkley '60.

Donna Dayton played both basketball and volleyball during her time at Corning Community College.  Donna was the lead scorer on the CCC women's basketball team from 1974-1976. She was named to the All-Tournament Team and MVP of the 1976 Elmira College Invitational Basketball Tournament, as well as the 1976 All-Tournament Team at the 1^st New York State Basketball Championships for Junior College Women.  As a lead setter/hitter on the volleyball court, Donna led the team to a 13-1 record her freshman year and a 16-1 record her sophomore year.

Donna received a basketball and volleyball scholarship to St. John Fisher, and after graduation, she joined the Air Force where she played basketball and softball for the Air Force teams. She was named to the All-American Team at the 1985 Amateur Softball Association National Championship. Donna has been honored with inductions into the Elmira Sports Hall of Fame, Cinderella Softball Hall of Fame, and Horseheads High School Hall of Fame. Since taking up golf in 1999, Donna has excelled in this as well, winning the National Postal Association Golf Tournament in 2003 and the 2004 Florida State Postal Golf Tournament.

Heidi Grimins is a two sport All-American player in both softball and basketball.  In addition to still being recognized by many as one of the most outstanding high school softball pitchers in Section V, highlights of Heidi's stellar softball career at CCC include being named to the 1^st Team Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) All-Conference Team, 1^st Team National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region III, NJCAA Region III Tournament All-Tournament Team, and 1^st Team Louisville Slugger National Fastpitch Coaches Assocation (NFCA) All-American. She was awarded the NJCAA Region III Softball Player of the Year, Region III Tournament Most Valuable Player and Pitcher, and was named to the National Tournament All-Tournament Team. In 2004, she led the Nation in ERA with a 0.67. During her CCC basketball career, she was named to the Tarantelli Classic All-Tournament Team, Adirondack Tournament All-Tournament Team, Erie Tournament All-Tournament Team, 1^st Team MSAC All-Conference Team, 1^st Team NJCAA All-Region III, NJCAA Region III Tournament All-Tournament Team. In 2004, she was second in the Nation in scoring average with 22.4 points per game.

Heidi has been honored as the CCC Female Athlete of the Year twice, NJCAA Region III Female Athlete of the Year, SUNY Chancellor's Award for Athletic Excellence, SUNY Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence, and as an NJCAA Academic All-American. In 2004, she also earned the Betty Jo Graber National Female Athlete of the Year Award, the only Division III athlete to ever win this award. Heidi's CCC softball jersey was retired in 2006.  Following her career at CCC, she attended Alfred University and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Accounting, while playing softball.  Heidi continues to remain active in the CCC Softball team by regularly attending athletics events and speaking to female athletes as a role model.

Timothy Havens played lacrosse at CCC under Coach Ed Michael and Coach Tucker Rochester. During his time at CCC, Timothy was selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region Teams and was honored as a National Junior College Lacrosse All-American. Timothy's talents on the lacrosse field led to the 1970 team being one of four chosen to play in the NJCAA's inaugural National Men's Lacrosse Championship held in Long Island, NY.

After two years at CCC, Timothy took his lacrosse skills to Towson State College in Maryland where he would once again distinguish himself on the playing field by leading Towson in scoring. Tim was a two-time Mason-Dixon All Conference Team selection and was chosen as First Team Little All-American Attackman in 1973. His team played in the semifinals of the NCAA College Division National Lacrosse Championship, and he was a starting attackman for the South in the annual North/South All-Star Lacrosse Game. Playing in the All-Star Game put Timothy amongst the most elite of college lacrosse players of his time.

Timothy Havens continued playing lacrosse beyond college. He was a team member of the prestigious Mount Washington Lacrosse Club in Baltimore, MD and the Miller High Life Lacrosse Club in Syracuse, NY. Drafted in 1973 to play professionally in the National Indoor Box Lacrosse League, he was one of the first U.S. citizens to play in this league when he saw action for the Toronto Tomahawks and later the Boston Bolts. While in Toronto, he earned Third Team All-Defensive Team league honors.

Beverly Beebe has been a force in Red Barons Athletics since 1969 when she joined the college as a Professor of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. She held positions as the Division Chairman (1973-1983), Acting Athletic Director (1977-1978), and Assistant Athletic Director (1983-1992). Beverly is the founding coach for both the men's and women's bowling teams at CCC and was the steward of these programs for over 22 years.

During Beverly's coaching career, she had 12 players named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Americans, three bowlers qualify for the National Collegiate Singles Championships of American College Union's International, six crowned National Champions, and one player turn professional with the PBA. Four of her teams qualified for the National Collegiate Champions Sectional Roll-Offs; three teams won NJCAA Region III Championships; and two teams were NJCAA National Runners-Up.

Beverly was inducted into the 2001 NJCAA Hall of Fame, Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, and Corning Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1984.  She was awarded the NJCAA Tournament Directors Award in 1981. Beverly has served on the Women's International Bowling Congress, Young American Bowling Association/American Junior Bowling Congress Corning Board, and New York State Women's Bowling Congress Scholarship Committee.

Wayne Kenner, Professor in the Math, Physics, Technology Division and Men's Basketball coach, joined the College in 1968. He had a unique ability to reach out to young men from inner-city circles and offer a life without crime, poverty, and anger by playing basketball at CCC with Coach Kenner at the helm. Wayne is remembered as a marvelous coach, educator, and gentleman. Many of Coach Kenner's former students and athletes have gone on to become successful professionals who share his determination to "pay it forward." The fact that he succeeded in turning at-risk youth into dedicated students and proven athletes resulted in the achievement of the Red Barons' 500^th win on November 10, 1998.

In 1992, Wayne was honored as the Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) Coach of the Year, and in 1993 and 1994 his players were named MSAC Player of the Year. Two of Coach Kenner's former athletes have gone on to play professional basketball in Europe. In addition to many winning seasons, Wayne led his 1994-1995 team to victory in the MSAC Championship and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III Championship, as well as Runners-Up at the NJCAA National Championship.  He was also named Conference, Region, and National Coach of the Year in 1995.  Wayne was also honored in 2009 as the CCC main gym floor, where the Red Barons basketball team plays, was officially named Kenner Court.
