The Corning CC softball team couldn't catch a break from Mother Nature and poor weather and field conditions can be blamed for spoiling their opening weekend trip to Westmoreland CC this weekend. CCC was scheduled to play a doubleheader against WCCC on both Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17. Instead, the Barons will have to wait to hit the field until the following weekend when they are scheduled for DH's at Hagerstown CC and Frederick CC in Maryland on March 23 and 24th.
The Red Barons are coming off a 2012 season that once again saw them finish in the top four of Region III teams before falling in the Regional Finals. Corning returns a very solid core of sophmores from that team and have added some impact freshman as well. In fact, all seven returners were starters on the 2012 squad.
Leading the team are sophmores Mollie Peck and Aja Gosper. Peck, a shortstop, was a 2012 All-MSAC Conference selection, an All-Region III selection and was named an NFCA All-American during her freshman campaign. Gosper, in centerfield, also earned All-MSAC and All-Region III honors in 2012. Returning in the circle are Sammi Moffe and All-MSAC player Nicole Sutryk. Both had were not only solid pitchers, but play infield positions as well when not on the mound. Secondbaseman McKayla Hutley and outfielders Lindsay Lax and Brittany Ladd also return and are looking to use their game experience from the 2012 season to make an even bigger impact this season.
A solid core of freshman will challenge the veterans for starting roles this season. Emily McCracken and Samantha Erbach, both outfielders, come from strong high school programs and are looking to break into the starting line-up. Courtney Sutryk and Jessica Jenner are infielders that have shown good potential and Alison Dockstader brings additional depth to the outfield. Becca Hendrickson and Rebecca Smith are carrying the catching duties and have looked strong behind the dish.
The day to day competition for starting roles should benefit the Red Barons as they look to once again grab a spot in the Region III Tournament.
