The CCC softball team squared-off with Region III rival Alfred State College in the last doubleheader the two teams will ever play. ASC'S will be transitioning to a four-year college next academic year and competing at the NCAA level. The Red Barons were able to keep bragging rights as they swept their visitors 5-0 and 4-2.
In game one, Mollie Peck and Nicole Sutryk each doubled as Sammi Moffe hit 2 RBI's and earned the 5-hit shutout win. Peck was 2 for 3, Sutyrk was 2 for 4 and Moffe earned 6 strikeouts in her 7 innings of work. This was Moffe's second straight shutout. Entering the bottom of the 5th, the game was 1-0 CCC until the Red Barons struck for 3 runs to put the game away. The Corning defense was flawless, committing no errors.
Game two was Nicole Sutryk's turn to shine on the mound as she threw 7 innings, allowed 3 hits, no earned runs and 10 strikeouts. A rough defensive first inning saw CCC commit four errors and allow ASC to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Red Barons finally touched the plate in the bottom of the 4th as they struck for 3 runs and took the lead for good. Two of those runs came compliments of a Courtney Sutryk two-run double. The CCC defense came back to life as Mollie Peck and Courtney Sutryk turned a double play to end a ASC'S threat in the 5th inning. In the 6th, Alfred loaded the bases with only one out before an Alfred runner was tagged out at the plate attempting to score on a passed ball and two pitches later Sutryk retired the batter on strikes to end the inning.
Corning travels to Hudson Valley CC Saturday and then on to Fulton Montgomery CC Sunday afternoon for their last two road doubleheaders. Corning is home next against Onondaga CC on Tuesday, April 30 @ 3pm and then ends the regular season on Wednesday, May 1 as they host Jamestown Olean CC at 4pm.
