#1 Corning CC hosted #8 Tompkins Cortland CC in a sub-regional softball game atop Spencer Hill on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. At stake, advancing to the NJCAA Region III Final Four. Corning rose to the occassion and got the 8-3 win, advancing in the play-offs.
Corning scored two runs in the 2nd and the Panthers answered back with two of their own in the top of the 3rd to tie it up. The Red Barons didn't keep the game tied for long as Jamie Cook took the first pitch of the bottom of the 3rd deep over the left center field fence for a HR and the 3-2 Corning lead. Corning would add an additional 3 runs in that inning thanks to a Gabby Citriniti walk, Morgann Swan reached base safely and then Rachelle Rafferty plated them both with a double. TC3 added a run in the 6th to cut the gap to 6-3 but CCC added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th on basehits by Brooke Hockeborn, Swan and Rafferty. Hockeborn was 3 for 4 with 2 stolen bases, Diamond Villegas was 2 for 2, Rafferty 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's and Cook 2 for 4 with a HR. Villegas scattered 9 hits over the 7 innings, struck out 7 and walked two.
Corning will face the winner of the Monroe/Finger Lakes game for a best out of 3 series hosted at Cornell University on Friday. Game times will be released tomorrow.
The Red Barons are now 30-3 on the season. This is their 4th ever 30-win season and the 9th time in the past 16 years they have advanced to the Regional Final Four.
