Corning Women Stumble in Opener; TC3 to Meet Cumberland in Tarantelli Championship
In the opening night of the 34th Annual Tarantelli Classic, the CCC women's hoop team couldn't keep up with a speedy Cumberland County College team as the Dukes ran away with a 70-48 victory.
In the opening night of the 34th Annual Tarantelli Classic, the CCC women's hoop team couldn't keep up with a speedy Cumberland County College team as the Dukes ran away with a 70-48 victory. Corning had no answer for the Dukes transition game, which was responsible for 60% of their offensive output.
Corning's Mollie Peck and Marissa Pike accounted for all but 8 of the Red Barons points as Peck netted 21, and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds, while Pike dropped 19 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and handed out 3 assists. Chelsea Lehman dished out a season-high 7 assists. Four of the Dukes reached double-digits; Stephanie Rodriquez (19 points), Tess Elder (12 points), Shanece Howard (11 points) and Morgan Gaines-Hunt (10 points). Cumberland stays perfect on the season with their 7th win.
In the opener, TC3 took a 25-17 halftime lead and hung on to beat the SUNY Delhi Broncos 51-46. The Broncos were able to tie the contest at 44 with 6 minutes left but the Panthers were able to hit some clutch free throws down the stretch and limit their opponent to only one more bucket the rest of the way. Becca Holton led the Panthers with 19 points while teammates Chelsi Rosa and Audrey Kate Ordway each reached double-digits with 10 apiece. Shania Vandermark led the Broncos with 13 points.
SUNY Delhi will face the Red Barons at 1pm Saturday in the consolation game while TC3 will square-off with the Cumberland Dukes for the Tourney Title at 3pm.
The men's portion of the Tarantelli Classic will begin Saturday evening at 5pm as TC3 plays Jamestown Olean and the the host Red Barons will open action against Columbia Greene CC at 7pm. The Tarantelli will conclude on Sunday with the men's consolation game at 11am and the Finals at 1pm.
