Day one of the Cara Bryant Memorial Volleyball Tournament was a good one if you are a fan of the Red Barons volleyball team. Corning posted a 2-0 record by defeating MSAC-rival Finger Lakes CC and SUNY Delhi.
In the opener, CCC jumped out to a 25-23 victory before the Lakers battled back to take set two 20-25 to knot things up. The decisive game three was all Red Barons, courtesy of Mollie Peck and Katie Dunning, as they stormed to a 15-3 win to take the match. Peck was again big for the Barons as she posted 4 aces, 3 kills and 11 service points. Dunning added 3 kills, 4 aces and 9 service points. The dynamic-duo combined for 11 service points of the 15 points scored in the final set.
Next up for Corning were the Broncos of SUNY Delhi. The Barons were able to put together a total team effort and down the Broncos 25-20 and 25-19. Peck continued to flex her muscle as she had 9 kills, 1 block, 4 aces and 8 service points. Chelsea Hutsick dished out 23 setter assists and Dunning added 8 kills. Sammi Moffe delivered 9 service points and Evelyn Caceres had 5 kills.
The eleven-team tournament continued Saturday as the Barons faced Monroe CC and Mohawk Valley CC prior to the single-elimination seeding. Monroe jumped to a 24-13 lead before Red Baron Lindsay Lax rattled off 10 straight service points to close the gap to 24-23. Too bad for Corning that was as close as they would get to the Tribunes the rest of the day. MCC won set two 13-25.
Next up for the Barons were the Hawks from Mohawk Valley CC. Corning pulled away with a 2-1 victory after dropping the first set 23-25. CCC pushed forth by scores of 25-16 and 15-6 to get past the Hawks and end pool play with momentum. Caceres had 8 kills and 6 blocks while Peck continued her assault on defenders as she posted 12 kills, 7 service points and 4 digs. Dunning added 8 kills and 3 digs while Hutsick had 22 assists.
In the single-elimination portion of the tourney, Corning was paired up with Jamestown CC. The Jayhawks proved to be too much for the Barons as they pounded Corning 6-25 in set one. CCC bounced back and played tough before falling in set two 24-26. Peck ended the game with 10 kills, Caceres had 5 kills and Hutsick added another 17 assists and 5 digs.
