The Red Barons women's and men's basketball teams dropped both ends of their doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the CCC Gymnasium. The Corning women made things interesting as they battled back from a 14-point deficit in the second half to tie things up with 8-minutes remaining, but that was as close as they could get, dropping the contest 58-50. On the men's side, CCC took a halftime lead into the locker room at half but couldn't convert in crunch time as they fell 66-58.
Mollie Peck scored a career-high 26 points, grabbed four rebounds and had four steals while teammate Marissa Pike added 16 points, five steals and ten rebounds. Corning hurt themselves by committing 25 turnovers and shooting a dismal 2 for 16 from beyond the 3-point arc. HVCC provided a very balanced offensive attack as four players scored in double-digits.
The Corning men showed some depth as 10 of the 13 players on the roster scored in the contest. Jamie Anderson and Markee Brown each had 8 points, (Brown added 7 rebounds), Malik Edwards, Damon Garfield and Will Griffin added 7 points apiece (Griffin had 3 assists), and Jake Kleya and Gladimy Saladin scored six each while Saladin led the team in rebounding with 11. A team 20 turnovers hurt the Red Barons as well as the fact they only attempted five free-throws in the game.
Corning hosts Davis College Tuesday, November 6. Women tip-off at 6pm and men follow at 8pm.
