Corning Men Win Consolation Game; Panthers Win Title
TC3 wins Tournament title and CCC wins consolation game.
The Corning men earned redemption Sunday afternoon as they defeated Jamestown Olean CC 76-72, in the consolation game of the 2012 Tarantelli Classic.
Corning took a 40-38 lead into the locker room and was able to extend its margin to 10 points with 11 minutes to play. Consecutive poor offensive posessions by the Barons led to JCC conversions that closed the gap to 2 points within the next 2 minutes. A Will Griffin layup with 2:40 remaining extended the Barons lead to four. The game remained 71-67 for over two minutes and the Jaguars had a chance to close iit within two with :48 left but missed two free throws. Malik Edwards hit four consecutive free throws down the stretch to preserve the 76-72 victory. Griffin had a solid game as he scored 27 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and took 2 charges. Edwards ended with 13 points while Gladimy Saladin added 12. Markee Brown recorded 17 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and had 4 steals as his efforts earned him a spot on the all-tournament team. JCC's Katrell Henry scored a game-high 28 points and was also named to the all- tourney team.
In the Championship game, the TC3 Panthers outlasted the Twins from Columbia Greene 69-63 to take the tourney title. The Panthers were led by Tyseem Lyles with 16 points.
