The CCC men's basketball team was able to hold on for a one-point victory as they hosted MSAC Conference rivals Jefferson CC on Sunday afternoon.
It was a see-saw battle, that never saw either team lead by more than six points, it had ten lead changes and 14 ties. It was the Corning bench and second chance points that prevailed and provided the Red Barons with the 51-50 victory. Corning's Will Griffin was a spark off the Barons bench and led all scorers with 14 points. The Corning bench outscored the Cannoneers bench 26-5. Corning also had 13 second chance points compared to JCC's 5. Eight different CCC players found their way into the scoring column. Gladimy Saladin was a factor once again as he scored 10, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots. Jefferson did have an opportunity to win as they gained possession of the ball down by one with 7.7 seconds remaining. Three opportunities under their own basket failed and Corning held on for the win. Justin Sullivan led Jefferson with 12 points and seven rebounds.
On the women's side of the doubleheader, Corning came at the Cannoneers with all cylinders firing but couldn't pull away the win and fell to JCC 66-58. Jefferson jumped out to an early 8-point lead but the Red Barons battled back and went into the locker room up 32-30 at the break.
Marissa Pike again led the Corning offense as she scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Mollie Peck recorded the double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds while Chelsea Lehman's scrappy play accounted for nine points, seven rebounds and four steals. Jefferson was led by the 3-point shooting of Tapulei Vaveao. Vaveao connected on 5 of 10 attempts from behind the arc on the way to a 17-point performance while dishing out 5 assists. Morgan Kiernan also added 17 for the Cannoneers.
The Red Barons host the Broome CC Hornets on Wednesday, January 23 with the women playing at 6pm and the men tipping off at 8pm. This game is also student appreciation night where all CCC students attending the game will get "BARON NATION" tee-shirts by showing their CCC student ID.
