Red Barons Beat Onondaga; Advance to MSAC Semi's
Crazy things needed to happen for the CCC men's basketball team to earn a home game in the first round of the MSAC Conference Hoops Tournament. Luckily for CCC, crazy was the flavor of the week.
Crazy things needed to happen for the CCC men's basketball team to earn a home game in the first round of the MSAC Conference Hoops Tournament. Luckily for CCC, crazy was the flavor of the week. Corning won their last four-straight MSAC contests and needed FLCC to beat OCC in the last regular season game to have a chance of hosting. At the buzzer, a FLCC player hit a mid-court prayer to defeat the Lazers by one to complete the crazy scenario and allow Corning to host.
In the two previous meetings this season, OCC appeared to have Corning's number as they defeated the Red Barons by scores of 87-76 and 93-86. Fortunately for Corning, Will Griffin put a stop to that. CCC played their best game of the season to date and defeated the Lazers 83-70. Will Griffin played a big part in that victory. The sophomore guard scored a game-high 33 points, recorded 5 steals and dished 7 assists as he led the Red Barons to their first victory against OCC and a trip to the MSAC Semi-finals. Teammates Joel Cramer and Nick VanBrunt added 10 points apiece while Cramer pulled in 6 boards and VanBrunt added 5 rebounds.
Corning, the #4 seed, will face #1 seeded Tompkins Cortland CC on Friday, February 21 in a 5pm contest, hosted by TC3. #2 seeded Finger Lakes CC will sqaure-off with #3 Cayuga at 7pm with the winners advancing to the MSAC Conference Finals on Saturday, February 22 at noon, again at TC3.
