Freshman Dominka Diaz (Endicott, NY) had an outstanding freshman campaign on the diamond this spring and that was solidified this week as she was named an NJCAA 2nd Team All-American. Diaz helped lead Corning to a 35-6 overall record, a MSAC Conference Championship, NJCAA Region III Championship (with a 21-1 Region III record) and a 5th place finish at the NJCAA College World Series. The slick fielding shortstop finished with a .894 fielding percentage but her softball IQ and instincts are what made the biggest contribution to the Red Baron defense.
Diaz was not only an asset in the field, but made lots of noise at the plate. The lead-off hitter posted a team-high .423 and plated 37 RBI's. She added 15 doubles, 57 runs scored, 24 walks, 15 doubles and was 30 for 32 in stolen bases.
Head Coach Stacy Johnson had this to say about Diaz: "Dominika was a big part of our success this season in both halves of the inning. Offensively she was a tablesetter but also came up with some huge RBI's at critical times throughout the season. Defensively, she knew what to do with the ball in every situation and displayed great range to both sides. D is a skilled and gritty ballplayer and doesn't shy away from big moments; that is where she thrives."
Diaz earned All-MSAC Conference Team recognition, was named 1st Team All-Region III and earned NJCAA College World Series All-Tournament recognition. Diaz becomes the 65th Red Baron softball player under Johnson's tenure to be named an NJCAA All-American.
